Earlier this week I saw a TV ad for the re-launch of the SodaStream. Yes the SodaStream!

It definitely seems to be a trend at the moment for bringing things back, especially from the eighties.
Thinking back, the SodaStream had a huge flaw, the fact that other pre-made fizzy drinks were a lot nicer, but I guess that was never really the point or the appeal of the product. As a child being able to make your own flavoured drinks was brilliant and if you didn’t own one, well basically you were a nobody.
I was glad to see that they had stuck with the old strapline ‘Get busy with the Fizzy’ which I’m sure you’ll all remember and which really works on a nostalgic level. Although I am very disappointed with the new logo, which is all over the place as far as design goes and certainly doesn’t match up to the original which has that brilliant retro feel. I think SodaStream has missed a real trick here and has not played to its strengths, the website looks far too dull and corporate and would appeal to children about as much as Songs of Praise. Where is the fun element? I have no doubt this product could do well again in 2010, as although trends change, ultimately children don’t, but if the product isn’t marketed correctly SodaStream could fall flat, like a lot of the drinks it used to make.
