Google shows off with animated particle logo

Are Google having fun, showing off, or is there something more to the new non-flash animated particle logo on the search page?

Google frequently change their logo in the search page, usually to celebrate a special occasion or holiday. Today it seems they’re celebrating their love of HTML and JavaScript by showing an animated logo made from multi-coloured balls that react to your mouse.

I guess they simply want to show people the kind of effects that can be achieved without Flash, but since this isn’t available on the iPhone, the most popular non-flash platform, it’s not really saying much. I’m sure they could do something though, but it would have to react differently as there is no mouse.

I’m surprised they haven’t implemented an HTML5 logo yet but perhaps this is a pre-cursor to something a little more interesting. Since it’s not clickable like other logos, there’s no official explanation behind it at this stage.

Here’s some screenies in case it’s gone by the time you read this.
