We have seen such battles before with the release of the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 respectively, but the new motion technology is set to rival the Nintendo Wii. The Wii has been the dominant console in the last few years, with its ground-breaking technology, accompanied with a wide ranging target market and a relatively cheap price; it has been a great success. Xbox and Playstation have trailed, but both are set to release their own motion capture technology.
The Playstation releases the ‘Move’ in September, consisting of a controller not dissimilar to the Wii but far more accurate and ‘captures a full range of motion’. Two controllers can be used together to further extend the range of movements and functions available. The Xbox’s ‘Kinect’ is completely innovative, as it does not use a controller. The games are played simply by a camera capturing the player’s movement and displaying this on screen to affect the game. This is the first real breakaway from the need for a controller, and one that will undoubtedly be popular on its November release. But have Xbox left it too late? Playstation Move will be available in September, allowing users to engage well before the Christmas rush. If consumers buy PS3’s to accompany this product, it is highly unlikely that a new Xbox 360 and Kinect will be affordable for Christmas.
The pricing is also a key factor, with the Move being priced at around £45 for a game, controller and camera, where as the Kinect is priced at £129.99, a huge, and potentially decisive difference. It will be extremely interesting to see which console will come out on top to rival Wii, but my gut instinct is that Xbox’s pricy, yet brilliant movement technology might just edge the Playstation Move out. In my opinion, the difference between the Wii and the Playstation Move is negligible, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Kinect at the top of many children’s Christmas lists.
