I was watching TV this week, and was surprised to see that the retro Milky Way advert featuring the red car and the blue car, is back! Revived a couple of times since its first airing in 1989, this advert has been updated from the original with minor lyrical changes and a retraction of the claim not to ruin your appetite.
Telling the story of the day when the red car and the blue car had a race, this advert will have everyone singing along, whether they have seen it before or not. The retro appeal is key, because it targets consumers old and new, and evokes a refreshing sense of nostalgia.
I always find it refreshing when advertising reverts back to an old favourite. It reminds me that a good idea is timeless, and also challenges the idea that we must always be trying to re-make the wheel. Sometimes, it’s good to remind consumers and clients just what it is they originally loved about a product, because the fact is, that reason is still probably the reason that converts them to buy the product now, just as much as it ever has been!
